Online Ad Sales- Great information.
Nuts and bolts: maximizing online ad sales on newspaper sites http://tinyurl.com/4xcvpn
Awesome article, Greg! Thanks for sharing. I’ll add it to our lists and create a discussion page on this topic.
Digital predictions for 2008 that didn’t pan out (and what we can learn):
1. online advertising will grow 29%. Instead it only grew 15% in the first six months and 11% in the last quarter. lesson learned: we can’t depend on online ads to save us. but we knew that.
2. advertisers will learn to love facebook and youtube. not yet. solve this problem and we’ll be billionaires
3. Hulu, another network attempt on the web, will fail. not true. traditional media can do this.
4. digg will be aquired.
5. google killer will emerge. no one can touch these guys.
6. big daily paper will go all digital. not quite. but Christian Science Monitor will in April 2009.
7. 2008 will be the year of mobile advertising. there’s the iPone, apps and blackberry storm. so we’re inching this way. but not yet. Still A LOT of potential.
8. The kindle will flop. see the trend discussion on this blog. Oprah endorsed it. They’ll be fine.
9. Broadcast tv dies and web will rule. while online video is hot. see hulu above. traditional broadcast is doing fine.
10. It’ll be a huge year for internet stocks. was it a huge year for any stock?
This was really interesting to read – thanks for sharing, Carly. I loved the reference to Kindle’s succes based on the Oprah endorsement… So true. What social power that woman enjoys… she, as a brand, would be a fantasitc study…
Here are some more 2009 predictions from the folks at ReadWriteWeb: http://tinyurl.com/8xfhea.
This one is interesting: “Media properties prominently experiment with different and innovative types of online advertising; in other words the move beyond CPM starts to actually happen…a stunning new metric will emerge that accurately determines the success of media properties beyond mere page views.”

News No Longer Newspaper’s Forte
According to the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, the Internet has now surpassed all other media except television as an outlet for national and international news. Currently, 40% of the survey respondents say they get most of their news about national and international issues from the internet, up from just 24% in September 2007. For the first time in a Pew survey, more people say they rely mostly on the internet for news than cite newspapers. Television continues to be cited most frequently as a main source for national and international news.
